A week before her wedding Janien Steyn is found dead, grotesquely arranged on a bike in her wedding dress, with a long red bridal train in her wake, as if in mid flight. Retired policeman Jaap Reyneke asks Sarah Fourie, a hacker with a criminal record and zero social skills, to help solve the case.

Janien was a successful artist and business woman, and on the point of marrying her university sweetheart.

Was it suicide or murder? Why was her body arranged so carefully, almost artfully? And why did she wipe her computer’s memory so thoroughly before her death?

Dear London - Notes from the Big City (Paperback): Irma Kurtz Dear London - Notes from the Big City (Paperback)
Irma Kurtz
R331 Discovery Miles 3 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A wonderfully original, warm and witty account of London over the past 3 decades that simultaneously charts the author's rise from incidental tourist to internationally renowned agony aunt. Irma Kurtz arrived in London from New Jersey in the late 1950s. Horrified by the postwar drabness, she fled to Paris, city of romance - and heartbreak . She returned to London in 1963, and her renewed encounter with the city developed into a slow-burn love affair. Irma's witty and percipient observations of contemporary London provide stepping stones into the past, and so both her own amazing life story and that of the metropolis unfurl before us in Dear London. Rebel and free spirit par excellence, her recollections create a vivid portrait of the Age of Aquarius; and her early career is a highly entertaining helter-skelter through the Central Office of Information, Raymond's Revue Bar and life at England's first girlie magazine, King before a post at the innovative Nova magazine set her on a course that she would pursue with huge success.

The Routledge Handbook of the Politics of the #MeToo Movement (Paperback): Giti Chandra, Irma Erlingsdottir The Routledge Handbook of the Politics of the #MeToo Movement (Paperback)
Giti Chandra, Irma Erlingsdottir
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Since the MeToo hashtag went viral in 2017, the movement has burgeoned across social media, moving beyond Twitter and into living rooms and courtrooms. It has spread unevenly across the globe, with some countries and societies more impacted than others, and interacted with existing feminist movements, struggles, and resistances. This interdisciplinary handbook identifies thematic and theoretical areas that require attention and interrogation, inviting the reader to make connections between the ways in which the #MeToo movement has panned out in different parts of the world, seeing it in the context of the many feminist and gendered struggles already in place, as well as the solidarities with similar movements across countries and cultures. With contributions from gender experts spanning a wide range of disciplines including political science, history, sociology, law, literature, and philosophy, this groundbreaking book will have contemporary relevance for scholars, feminists, gender researchers, and policy-makers across the globe.

Designing Dandelions - An Engineering Everything Adventure (Hardcover): Emily Hunt, Michelle Pantoya Designing Dandelions - An Engineering Everything Adventure (Hardcover)

When Bells and Mitch, two young space aliens from the planet Exergy, crash-land on Earth, they must apply the engineering design process to get themselves back home. Captivated by the beautiful yellow dandelions near their crash site, Bells and Mitch investigate the dandelions' life cycle. Observing how the flowers disperse their seeds, they construct a mechanical replica to launch their ship back into space. Showing how nature itself can instruct us in engineering, Hunt and Pantoya take young readers on a journey of discovery and problem solving. The authors worked with early childhood literacy experts and science museums in developing this story that teaches the relationship between science and engineering, explains the design process, and introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts and vocabulary.

Dynamics and Income Distribution - The Selected Essays of Irma Adelman, Volume II (Hardcover): Irma Adelman Dynamics and Income Distribution - The Selected Essays of Irma Adelman, Volume II (Hardcover)
Irma Adelman
R4,130 Discovery Miles 41 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dynamics and Income Distribution brings together Irma Adelman's pioneering applications of econometrics, as well as papers on the poverty and income distribution implications of growth and development. The volume combines some early papers on business cycles and long swings with other pieces focusing on just economic development. With a firm emphasis on the dynamics of income inequality, this volume includes empirical study of how inequality changes with economic development and the conceptual development of dynamic indices of income inequality. Professor Adelman's papers draw on quantitative simulation models and the experience of specific countries to discuss policies to alleviate poverty and reduce inequality. The author argues that trickle-down processes are not likely to reduce poverty sufficiently rapidly. Land reform and the equal access to education need to be focused in order to generate the initial conditions for equalizing economic development. Economic development and poverty reduction, she suggests, require an emphasis on education, on institutions determining access to jobs and resources, and on labour-intensive types of economic growth. With its companion volume, Institutions and Development Strategies, this collection of selected essays makes a significant contribution by improving access to Irma Adelman's pioneering work on the economics and policy of development.

Islam, Women's Sexuality and Patriarchy in Indonesia - Silent Desire (Paperback): Irma Riyani Islam, Women's Sexuality and Patriarchy in Indonesia - Silent Desire (Paperback)
Irma Riyani
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the intimate marital relationships of Indonesian Muslim married women. As well as describing and analysing their sexual relationships, the book also investigates how Islam influences discourses of sexuality in Indonesia, and in particular how Islamic teachings affect Muslim married women's perceptions and behaviour in their sexual relationships with their husbands. Based on extensive original research, the book reveals that Muslim women perceive marriage as a social, cultural, and religious obligation that they need to fulfil; that they realise that finding an ideal marriage partner is complicated, with some having the opportunity for a long courtship and others barely knowing their partner prior to marriage; and that there is a strong tendency, with some exceptions, for women to consider a sexual relationship in marriage as their duty and their husband's right. Religious and cultural discourses justify and support this view and consider refusal a sin (dosa) or taboo (pamali). Both discourses emphasise obedience towards husbands in marriage.
